Active Adventures to Enjoy with Your Dog in the River Valley

Staying healthy doesn’t have to mean treadmills and gym memberships.

Sometimes, the best workout is a long walk with your dog, fresh air in your lungs, and the River Valley’s natural beauty all around you.

Our region is filled with trails and parks that offer great exercise for both you and your pup.

1. Hike the Lake Alma Trail

Just off I-40, the Lake Alma Trail is a scenic 3.8-mile loop around the lake. It’s shaded, moderately challenging in spots, and perfect for stretching your legs on the weekend. Your dog will love the forested paths and occasional wildlife sightings.

2. Stroll the Riverfront in Fort Smith

The Greg Smith River Trail runs along the Arkansas River in Fort Smith, offering paved walking and biking paths with beautiful river views. If you want something shorter, try the River Loop Trail near the Fort Smith National Historic Site — history and exercise in one outing.

3. Get Moving at Ben Geren Park

Ben Geren Park in Fort Smith has a 1.5-mile fitness trail with workout stations along the way. It’s an easy way to combine light cardio with strength exercises while giving your pup a chance to enjoy the outdoors.

4. Take a Day Trip to Lake Fort Smith

For a bigger adventure, head north to Lake Fort Smith State Park. With multiple trails ranging from short nature walks to the legendary Ozark Highlands Trail, this park is a great spot for a day of hiking. Bring water and snacks — for you and your dog — and enjoy the mountain scenery.

5. Don’t Forget the Daily Walks

Even if you can’t make it to a trail, your neighborhood sidewalks and local parks are still great options. Consistency matters more than distance — and your dog will thank you for every step.

đŸŸ The Bottom Line: Whether it’s a quiet evening stroll or a weekend hike, being active with your dog keeps both of you healthier, happier, and more connected.

The River Valley has no shortage of beautiful spots to explore — so leash up, head outside, and make wellness part of your everyday life.
