Exploring Fort Smith's Vibrant Mural Scene |
A Self-Guided Tour Through Downtown's Artistic Masterpieces |
Over the past decade, Fort Smith has transformed into a dynamic hub for international street art, thanks in large part to initiatives like The Unexpected Project.
This movement has adorned the city's downtown with an array of stunning murals, turning it into an open-air gallery that beckons both locals and visitors alike.
Embarking on a self-guided tour of these murals offers a unique opportunity to experience the city's cultural renaissance firsthand. Here's a curated route to guide your exploration:
Stop 1: "Bad Lands" by D*Face Located on Garrison Avenue, this pop-art-inspired mural features a masked cowboy, blending comic-book boldness with western grit. It's one of downtown's most photographed pieces.
Stop 2: ASKEW's Cherokee Mural At Neumeier's Rib Room, 424 Garrison Ave., this vibrant mural pays tribute to Cherokee heritage and identity. After admiring the art, consider grabbing a bite at Neumeier's.
Stop 3: Maser’s Geometric Mural Just off Garrison Avenue, Irish artist Maser has transformed a plain wall into a modern masterpiece with bold geometric shapes and a kaleidoscope of colors.
Stop 4: VHILS' Cherokee Portrait Near Garrison Avenue, Portuguese artist VHILS uses carving and layering techniques to sculpt faces into stucco, creating a piece that's as much sculpture as painting.
Stop 5: Saner & Ana Maria Murals In Goins Furniture Alley, this duo blends Mexican folk art influences with local culture, resulting in murals alive with storytelling and vibrant symbolism.
Stop 6: Guido van Helten’s Silo Murals At the OK Foods Silos on South B Street, towering portraits of local factory workers stretch across grain silos, creating a monumental and deeply human artwork.
Recent Additions to the Mural Walk
In May 2025, the Alleyway Art Walk introduced "Mind Gap," a bold sidewalk mural by Northwest Arkansas artist TigerSasha.
Located in the 7th Street pedestrian corridor between 702 Garrison Avenue and the B.G. Hendrix State Building, this vibrant piece enhances the connection between Garrison and Rogers Avenues.
The project also includes bistro lighting, improving walkability and creating an inviting pathway for residents and visitors.
Tips for Enjoying the Walk
Best Time: Late afternoon to evening, when the murals are bathed in golden-hour light.
Bring a Camera: Every mural offers a unique photo opportunity.
Coffee Stops: Consider visiting local favorites like Fort Smith Coffee Company.
Dining Options: Conclude your tour with food and live music at The Bakery District or enjoy BBQ at Neumeier’s Rib Room.
